MOBILE, ALABAMA – The American Softball Association (ASBA) will hold its professional player draft on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at Moe’s Original BBQ, 701 Spring Hill Avenue in Mobile. The draft kicks off the second season of ASBA, a professional women’s softball organization. The league is comprised of four teams that compete in a 30-game season from June 14 through July 31, 2019. Games will be played at Pat Hicks Softball Field on the campus of Satsuma High School in Satsuma, AL.
ASBA was built on a revenue-sharing model that guarantees an equal distribution between players and the league. Salaries are paid from all softball related income which includes, but is not limited to, ticket sales, proceeds from the ASBA Network, local sponsorship agreements, and merchandise sales.
“I am excited to see how the league develops in this second season,” says Michael A. Chiaradio, CEO of ASBA. “We had a great first year and are now concentrating on enhancing the fan and player experience in anticipation of growing the league and adding teams in 2020.”
ASBA relies on families from Mobile County to house the players for the season. Volunteer hosts need only provide a private bedroom and bureau or closet and are not required to feed, transport, or in any way finance the players.
“While the fiscal advantages were obvious,” Chiaradio says of the league’s decision to utilize host families. “What really blew us away was the incredible support and life-long friendships that were born from the pairing of our players with these amazing families.”
